Explosions in Kerman
At least 50 people have died – according to state television – and more than sixty have been injured in two explosions that occurred in Kerman, in southeastern Iran, during the commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the death of Iranian General Soleimani.
Honoring Soleimani
Thousands of people had gathered at the cemetery in Kerman to pay tribute to the former head of Irans Quds Force, who was killed four years ago in a US drone attack in Iraq. Soleimani was the architect of Irans foreign policy in the Middle East, responsible for expanding Tehrans influence in the region.
Accidental explosion or deliberate attack?
According to Iranian state television, it is still unknown whether the explosions were accidental or a deliberate attack. A security official from the province stated that it is yet to be determined.
Tension in the region
The explosion comes at a time of heightened tension in the region, hours after the assassination of Saleh al Arouri, a senior Hamas official. Other five members of the Palestinian organization died in the attack. Arouri was Hamas main supporter in the region, and his death increases the risk of the conflict in Gaza spreading to southern Lebanon and the region.
It is well known that Iran is seeking an excuse to attack Israel.
